Until about a hundred years ago, London was the largest city in the world. It was founded by the Romans in 50 AD and was then called Londinium. When the Romans retreated, Londinium was destroyed by the Teutons, after the new foundation it was only a small town. In 1066 King Wilhelm made it the capital of Great Britain again. In 1666, a major fire destroyed four fifths of what was then the city of London. During the Second World War, German bombers destroyed many parts of the city. In 1965, some politicians found that the city limits of London should be expanded so that the suburbs also had to pay taxes because they also took advantage of the city’s many advantages.
