What is the Big Ben?

Big Ben is often mistakenly referred as the Elizabeth Tower, but actually it is the largest bell in the Tower with it´s 13,5 tonnes.

The Big Ben is one of the most popular Sights from London. But did you know that just the clock is called Big Ben. To be exactly, this well know landmark is called Elizabeth Tower since 2012.

The tower is 96,3 meters high. Since 2010 only inhabitants of Great Britain can visit the tower. Because the government is afraid of terror attacks. It is part of the Palace of Westminster where the parliament sits. The diameter of the four dials is seven meters each. The minute hands have a length of 4.3 meters, the hour hands measure 2.74 meters. This makes it the second largest watch in the UK.

Since 2017 the Tower has been restored. The repair work was estimated to take three years and a total of 29 million pounds.

The Tower is even by night worth a visit because it is illuminated with many spotlights.
